Migrating Group Policies to Azure Intune Policies
| August 6, 2020Most enterprise organizations have made foundational investments in Active Directory, leveraging Group Policy Objects (GPOs) to manage their environment securely. However, when making a move to cloud-based systems such as Microsoft Azure, many discover significant capability gaps. They want to utilize their already proven GPOs for both efficiency and consistency.
When organizations don’t have consistent policies for both on-premises and cloud resources, this approach opens organizations up to risk and puts them in danger of not meeting governance and compliance requirements. Most enterprises realize that they must find a way to get their policies to the cloud, but quickly discover that it isn’t as easy as it sounds.
Driving consistency around policy in your hybrid environment will make you more secure and help you meet governance and compliance requirements. Talk with our IT experts for services and solutions that can secure your enterprise organization.
Over the last 20 years, Group Policy settings have expanded and become incredibly granular–and more complex. Also, there are plenty of examples of other varieties of policy settings, including:
- Mobile Device Settings – With mobile devices such as iPhones and iPads, a new policy mechanism was created called Mobile Device Management (MDM). Vendors, such as AirWatch (VMware), Mobile Iron, and Microsoft Intune, manage and secure them.
- Operating System policies – In addition to GPOs for Windows domain-joined servers and desktops, there are Linux servers and desktops, as well as macOS, Chromebooks, and Windows servers and desktops. These are not connected to the domain, but require security and configuration policies
- Cloud Tenants – AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud have policies for securing and configuring firewalls, as well as additional critical settings that are the enterprise administrator’s responsibility.
- Virtual Images and Containers – These resources that are now being hosted in the cloud must be appropriately configured and secured.
- SaaS Applications Policies – Office 365, Salesforce, Box, Netsuite, and many more each have their own policy construct to secure and manage their internal settings.
- Internet of Things (IoT) – These small, yet powerful devices have configuration settings that must be set and enforced.
- And any additional IT-related resource
Micro Focus® Policy Compliance Assessor (PCA) can help to accelerate a move to the cloud. PCA enables enterprises to skip the labor-intensive spreadsheets and scripting with a more streamlined approach.
Businesses can automatically assess existing policies to determine which ones are cloud-ready. Then migrate the supported policies directly into Microsoft Intune with one click. By leveraging PCA, enterprises can quickly and easily re-evaluate GPOs as Microsoft releases periodic updates.
